Marilyn Friedman
"Walking Figure"
This six foot terra cotta stands as a record of its own construction. Using a direct process and built hollow over a single support, the work is not modeled but has evolved in a way that reflects the variety of tools used by the artist. The clay is pulled, pressed, and dragged to build the forms, silhouettes, and motifs of an abstract figure whose interrelationships are evidence of an exploration which expresses the process of creating the work. The artist’s choice of material relates directly to the natural world. The piece captures the dualities of strength and fragility, of vitality and stillness, in both it’s creation and expression.
