DAN BERGMAN
"House of Lies"
I began sculpting full time in 1988 after a twenty-five year career in business. I am originally from Chicago, grew up mostly in Cleveland, and attended Ohio State University. Through these years, I have continued art studies with The Art Student’s League, The Educational Alliance, The National Academy School, and The Urban Glass Workshop. I live in New York City and my studio is across the river in Guttenberg, NJ.
I see the world as formed by opposition and balance; and my sculpture, primarily in welded steel, explores the dualities that grip my imagination. The visual vocabulary is filled with oppositions: heavy and light, hard and soft, figure and ground, enclosed and open. Some recurring themes in my sculpture are:
- Tension, created through top-heavy forms, stretching and twisting, patterns of colors and rhythms that are interrupted or discordant
- Evocative places, suggested by landscapes, imaginary buildings, enigmatic figures
- Kinetic movement, hinting at underlying natural forces behind what we see.
