DAMIEN VERA
"Disposable Hero"
"Disposable Hero" is an award winner of The Sculptor's Alliance, Inc. in New York City. Damien Vera is a technical instructor teaching students the basics of metal working, forming, and welding as well as artistic uses for metal at The Art Student's League in Manhattan.
“Disposable Hero” is a life-size adjustable steel figure inspired by a Vietnam vet who was homeless in New York City. Damien Vera wanted to make a piece to remember what he saw. The piece is stripped down to bare emotion. You feel the emptiness and loss. His sculpture is like a toy soldier played with and disposed of.
The environment in which his work is displayed is important to Damien Vera. Positioning Disposable Hero in The Erika and David Boyd Sculpture Garden looking towards The American Legion Hall provided additional meaning for the artist.
Constantly intrigued by not only the human body, but the human spirit as well, while practicing new and old techniques, he loves to meet new people and hear their tale. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a sculpture tells an epic tale.
